Having been through the drama with my X1 Carbon 6th gen having major fan noise and overheating, I was pleased at the solution here on the forum, but recently the problem returned in a little different version. I think I’ve found a solution though.

After a fresh install of Windows 10 64 and the above mentioned steps, my X1 stayed quite cool and quiet all summer, but over the last few weeks that changed.
After a bit of investigation I found that Lenovo had installed what it calls the Intelligent Thermal Solution driver
