Which are the 5 Essential elements of PYP

As rightly said by many – education is what shapes you as a human being. Nowadays, parents enroll their kids in schools at an early age with the aim to build the personality of their child and inculcate the spark of learning.


These days parents have many options when it comes to selecting the education board for their child, it is no longer just CBSE (Central Board Of Secondary Education), SSC (Secondary School Certificate) OR ICSE (Indian Certificate of Secondary Education). The next big thing that is taking over the educational board is the International Baccalaureate (IB) board.   

The curriculum that is practiced by the IB board mainly focuses on creating an environment for the students to provide wholesome learning. The foundation is laid on three primary parameters:

They are interconnected and aligned with every aspect of the curriculum, and they are as follows – Appreciation,  Commitment, Confidence, Cooperation, Creativity, Curiosity, Empathy, Enthusiasm, Independence,  Integrity, Respect, and Tolerance.

2) Knowledge

There are six transdisciplinary themes students will learn throughout the school year. These themes are globally significant and cover concepts that are interconnected and are addressed throughout the curriculum, and can be applied to real life.

3) Key Concepts

There are eight fundamental concepts that drive instructions through inquiry, questions, and investigation.
Form – What is it like?
Function – How does it work?
Causation – Why is it like it is?
Change – How is it changing?
Connection – How is it connected to other things?
Perspective – What is the point of view?
Responsibility – What is our responsibility?
Reflection – How do we know?


4) Skills

There are five transdisciplinary skills students develop as they dive into the learning environment.

Thinking Skills
Research Skills
Self-management Skills
Communication Skills
Social Skills

5) Action

Students are encouraged to reflect on what is going on, make informed choices accordingly and to take action that will help their fellow mates, school staff, and the community.
