Ultrasound scans work on sound waves with higher frequency and it is used to capture videos and images of insides of body. Generally ultrasound scans are commonly attached with pregnancy, in fact, ultrasounds are the most exciting moments during pregnancy! Would-be-moms can see their babies moving inside their abdomen.
But the common complaint against abdominal ultrasound scans is the ultrasound gel! Why women need to experience that sticky, cold, and gooey sensation every time of their ultrasound sessions? Well, the sonographers do not do that intentionally for torturing their patients but it is the most essential part of the whole procedure. They need to apply the cold gel on their patients’ skin!
Why is ultrasound gel required for?
When the ultrasound gel is applied on the abdomen skin, it creates a conductive medium which binds the ultrasound transducer and the skin. The sound waves of ultrasound scans get it hard to travel into the air. It is the responsibility of the ultrasound gel to prevent the extra air during an ultrasound scan, so that a clear image can be generated of the fetus inside the body. This is one major reason why pregnant patients are asked to come with full bladder during their first trimester or earlier times of pregnancy. Why? It is when the ultrasound gel is applied on the skin and the bladder is full, the gel works as a coupling agent. Hence, he sonographers are able to see clear imge of the baby.
What is this gel?
Ultrasound gel is nothing but a clear sludge. It looks almost like aloe vera gel or a hair gel. In Madhya Pradesh, any dignified supplier can provide a wide range of ultrasound gel brands which may contain some particular combinations of glycerine, propylene glycol, dyes, perfume, carbapol R 940 polymer or phenoxyethanol, and water. Though the right combinations are not easy to find but the manufacturers of ultrasound gel in Madhya Pradesh provide excellent quality products which are hugely used in various healthcare centres.
So, what is basically the staff- ultrasound gel? It is composed with water (main ingredient!) and propylene glycol, and is mainly used to reduce complete static. It is sticky in nature because it should not get drip off the skin easily as the sonographer will need its presence during performing a scan. The gel locks all air pockets between the skin and the transducer and acts like a microphone. Then the ultrasound transducer is able to send sound waves with high frequency through the patient’s body. But the ultrasound waves are high-pitched for the humans to hear.
