Developed by a Japanese Buddhist, Mikao Usui, Reiki healing is an alternative healing technique. It reduces stress and also promotes emotional healing. Reiki practitioners use their palms to heal their patients. Reiki healing is said to transfer “universal energy” through the palms of the practitioner to the patient to encourage physical and mental well-being.
The word Reiki is composed of two Japanese words – ‘Rei’ stands for “God’s Wisdom or Higher power” and “Ki” means “life force energy”. Hence, Reiki means “spiritually guided life force energy”.
Reiki is spiritual. It targets the energy fields around the body. According to Reiki, energy can get trapped in the human body where there has been physical or emotional pain. If this energy isn’t released, it can cause illness. Reiki aims at removing these energy blocks and improves the energy flow around the body. This helps reduce the illnesses and symptoms of illness.
What Happens During a Reiki Session?
There is no typical Reiki session. Reiki Healing can be administered by anyone who has training in Reiki. Generally, Reiki should be administered in a quiet and peaceful place. Reiki practitioners frequently play soft music during a Reiki session, but you can let your practitioner know if you prefer silence. Mostly a Reiki session lasts up to an hour. Sometimes, it may be extended to 90 minutes.
Initially, you will have a short introduction or chat with the Reiki practitioner about your expectations from the session. Generally, the patient sits on a comfortable chair or lies on a table. The patient is fully clothed. The practitioner places their hand gently on or above specific areas of the body. They use different hand shapes over the body for 2 to 5 minutes. 20 various body areas can be focused on during a Reiki session.
When the practitioner holds their hands gently over an area of the body, transfer of energy takes place between the practitioner and the patient. The practitioner holds each hand position until he/she senses that energy in the patient’s body has stopped flowing.
What To Do After a Reiki Session?
During and after a Reiki session, the patient might feel a slight tingling, heat, or energy in some parts of their body. Moreover, the patient might also feel a sense of calm after a session. Generally, the patient is in a fully awake state after a session. So, they can continue with their normal, routine activities like driving, walking, etc after the session.
One must make sure to drink a plethora of water to hydrate the body and to consume healthy food. It is beneficial to spend some time alone after the session to gain a greater perspective and further mental clarity.
