The percentile tells you wherever you rank in the set or a group of people. Please don’t confuse with a percentage. In GATE, a percentage is not a measure of your performance. So, don’t concern if somebody says that they’ve scored 99.9X percentile and think that it is somewhat that is further than your capability. GATE percentile score of a student reflects their comparative performance in the exam.

To know in what way to calculate the GATE percentile, you can follow formula and example which has given below. The percentile can be calculated by a simple method.

Formula: P = ((N – your rank)/ N) x 100

Where, P = percentile score N = total number of student.

(N- Your rank) = number of student who’ve scored less mark.

For example, the total number of student who appearing for an exam are 100 and 95 of them have scored less than you, then

P = (95/100) X100

= 0.95×100

= 95 percentile.

On 2014 onwards, a new procedure is being used to calculate and standardize GATE percentile and marks according to the difficulty level of different terms. Also, the standardization process for GATE is meant only for the papers conducted in multiple sessions because of a large number of students appearing for the exam. The scores of individual GATE exam papers which undergo normalization before the final assessment include Mechanical Engineering (ME), Electronics and Communication Engineering (EC), Civil Engineering (CE), Computer Science (CS), and Electrical Engineering (EE).
