Interesting facts about Vivekananda Memorial Rock

Whenever we talk about the greatest personalities of India the name comes to our mind in Swami Vivekananda. Vivekananda Memorial Rock has constructed the mix of conventional and modern architectural styles of India, particularly a blend of Tamil Nadu and West Bengal style of architecture. While the Memorial Mandapam resembles Sri Ramakrishna Temple at West Bengal, the entrance design is the architectural style of Ajanta and Ellora. It houses a life-size bronze statue of Swami Vivekananda standing in his famous posture. Vivekananda Rock is also called Sripada Parai and it is believed that Goddess Devi Kumari blessed the place with the touch of her holy feet. In reality, the rock has a projection that is brownish in color and looks like a human footprint. You can see many Hotels in Kanyakumari near beach.

After visiting the temple of Devi Kanya Kumari Amman, Swami Vivekananda stood on the seashore gazing at two rocks that stood some 220yards away. He was seized by a sudden desire to visit these rocks. These rocks were the exact place where the Goddess Bhagawathi Amman stood in penance. As proof of this, there’s a small projection on the rock that resembles a human foot. In fact, the rock has been called Sri Pada Parai since puranic times it means the rock with the Goddess’s feet.  Since he did not have money to pay for the boatmen, he swam all the way to the rock. He sat in meditation for three days and nights with the ocean for the company. Being an ardent devotee of Kali, so it was only expected him to choose this place. Here was the place that Swami Vivekananda realized to reawaken India from its spiritual ignorance.

The Vivekananda Mandapam consists of Dhyana Mandapam – with six rooms, Sabha Mandapam – including Pralima Mandapam two rooms, a corridor, and an open Prakaram round the Sabha Mandapam, Mukha Mandapam and the Front Entrance steps with two rooms and a corridor below the steps.
