Golden Ratio Can Make Your Pictures Perfect

Have you heard about Golden Ratio, in nature every Golden Ratio is present. From your DNA to ocean waves and from nautilus shell to giant land mammals everything has Golden Ratio. In photography, a picture taken keeping this ratio in mind is said to appear more pleasing naturally.

Understanding Golden Ratio

It has so many names including phi grid, Fibonacci spiral, golden mean or golden spiral. It is a composition guide which helps your eyes and lead them through the whole picture.

Golden Ratio was here even before the modern cameras were invented. It is present in historic art pieces which include famous Last Supper by Leonardo Da Vinci and work by Michelangelo on the ceilings of the Sistine Chapel.

Now, you might be thinking that it might have stemmed from paintings however, this is not true. The concept of Golden Ratio stemmed from mathematics. Don’t worry it doesn’t require you to do any calculations if you want to use it in photography.

The golden ratio is 1.618 to 1 meaning if one object is 1.618 times larger than the other, the pair would please the eyes. This can be a bit easier for painters because they have more liberty than the photographers but a composition can be created with the help of this concept.

How To Use It In Pictures

It highly depends on the scene you have in front of you. Instead of directly pointing and shooting, think about the scene and the techniques you are going to use. There are three different techniques of composition; Golden Spiral, Phi Grid, and Rule of Three. Determine what technique will fit the best for you and that you can do after asking few questions from yourself.

  • Where you want to lead eyes?

This should be your subject because subject is the main highlight of every image and every eye falling upon your photo should focus on it.

  • What are the elements that can be added in the scene?

You need to take into account everything that is there in the scene and determine if these are distracting the attention from the subject or they are enhancing it. Nothing which distracts from the subject even slightly should not be included.

  • Are there natural curves or leading lines?

Natural curves ask for golden spiral while leading lines go best for phi grid.

You can get the better idea about incorporating this in the photos you click by attending Oz photography workshops in Australia.

Clicking It

Most cameras have rule of thirds option but few also features golden spiral or phi grid. Turn the feature on and it will help you get better results. You have to align any leading lines or natural curves that you have identified by adjusting the composition. It will be fun to explore composition possibilities while you shoot.

When you will be done clicking photos you’ll know what the hype is all about. There is nothing better or more perfect than our DNA, right? So, how can we argue against a technique that is literally used in our DNA. It ought to work and it will if you know how to do it the right way.
