Back pain is also another common neurological complaint noted in our out patient department. It could be acute and chronic. Acute is commonly described as a sharp pain or dull one, usually felt in the lower back, it can be more severe in one or more areas such as right or left side or centre. It can be constant, intermittent or severe. It usually recovers completely with rest and medication in 6 to 8 weeks.
Chronic low back pain: It can be radicular also known as sciatica, it is a dull aching back pain, may have pulling or dragging sensation and may be associated with pain in one or both legs, usually starts in one leg and may reach upto the toes. Pain may aggravate on walking, bending forward and lifting weights, pain may get relieved on rest. At later stages patient may develop numbness or weakness in the legs and difficulty in passing urine and stools.
Patients with back pain require evaluation with x ray, MRI and CT scan depending upon the symptoms.
