Who knew that a movie about male exotic dancers would earn accolades from critics and fans alike, earning well around 300 million dollars since its release in 2012? While it might have seemed unlikely at the time, it happened for Channing Tatum and the whole crew of “Magic Mike,” on a mere $6.5 million budget, no less.
In addition to Magic Mike being based on Channing Tatum’s real stint as an exotic dancer, here are 10 other fun facts about this hit film.
Fun Fact #1: Who Wants More?
There are 19 minutes of dancing scenes in the first ‘Magic Mike’, which was clearly not enough since the film has gone on to create a sequel, a live show in Vegas and even an unscripted reality TV competition.
Fun Fact #2: Scaled Down
Actor Joe Manganiello’s body was edited on the movie poster for the sequel ‘Magic Mike XXL’. But it wasn’t the usual editing. The producers actually thought Manganiello was too muscular, so they had to tone down some of his muscles to make him look more natural.
Fun Fact #3: All Real
The movie did not, even once, use a stunt dancer. What you see in both films are the actual actors working their way through some seriously complicated, and sometimes quite revealing, choreography.
Fun Fact #4: No Regrets
Matthew McConaughey’s character Dallas was not supposed to have a dance scene in the initial script. McConaughey insisted on having a dance scene because, he said he didn’t want to regret being in the movie and not getting up there.
Fun Fact #5: ‘Magic Mike’ Goes Reality TV
After ‘Magic Mike’ and ‘Magic Mike XXL,’ there is soon to be a reality show called “The Real Magic Mike.” Which will follow 10 men ‘who’ve lost their magic,’ according to the tagline. These men will compete for money and a spot in the Vegas show ‘Magic Mike Live.’ The casting for the next real Magic Mike is currently ongoing and the show should be out in late 2021.
Fun Fact #6: Real Magic Mike
Speaking of ‘The Real Magic Mike’, just like the actors in the original films, the 10 contestants will not have any experience as professional dancers. They will learn and perform routines and transform their bodies and confidence as part of the show’s journey.
Fun Fact #7: Quick Wrap
Aside from the famously low budget, shooting the original ‘Magic Mike’ took only 25 days.
Fun Fact #8: Not Meant to Be
Not all of the original stars approached for the film worked out. Jamie Foxx, who was supposed to play Rome, was replaced by Jada Pinkett Smith. Margot Robbie was replaced by Amber Heard as Zoe and Jessica Biel, who was originally slated to play Brooke, ended up being replaced by Cody Horn.
Fun Fact #9: Too Expensive
McConaughey bagged three Best Supporting Actor awards for his role, but he wasn’t able to reprise his part on the sequel because he became too expensive after Dallas Buyer’s Club.
Fun Fact #10: Not For Tall People
Former WWE wrestler Kevin Nash, who played Tarzan, said he had a hard time on set as a tall person. The 6-foot-10 Nash said filmmakers had to constantly work around him, either by doing scenes mostly in sitting or leaning positions to get the proper frame.
