Connect Brother MFC-9130CW Printer to WiFi Network

Your new Brother MFC-9130CW printer is something that you need and perfect for your small office: a multi-function wireless color laser printer. It’s a relatively high end model and it has the bells and whistles like wireless printing and print from mobile devices but you bought it primarily because you needed a color laser printer.

As you unboxed the printer you hooked the USB cable to your laptop’s USB port thinking that it works like plug and play. Windows recognized the printer and automatically installed a Generic Printer Driver. There’s a concerning issue, however. The printer didn’t perform as it should. When you test printed, the image has color banding; the printed output looks wrong or something’s amiss.

The good news is that the solution is not that hard to follow.

Surprisingly this issue is not as uncommon as it seems. Anyone can do that for human interface devices like a keyboard or mouse. But without proper installation your printer’s full capabilities will not be fully utilized. It’s as if you’re driving around in a sports car within a 30 kph speed limit urban road; you want to floor the pedal but you know you can’t.

Before you can use your Brother MFC-9130CW printer, you do the following:

  1. Ensure that no other programs are running before you insert the CD bundled with your printer.
  2. The installation program automatically runs. If not, you can locate it from your computer’s CD/DVD drive or download the latest version in the Downloads section from Brother’s official website.
  3. In the Connection Type you have two (2) choices:
    1. Local Connection via USB– select this if you don’t have a WiFi
    2. Wireless Network Connection– I would recommend selecting Wireless Network Connection if you have both WiFi and USB as it saves you time to setup for wireless printing capability in case you opted for Local Connection (USB) installation
  4. Once the installation detected a Firewall or Anti Virus, select “Change the Firewall port settings to enable network connection and continue with the installation”.
  5. Choose a Destination Location and Program Folder. I usually leave this setting as it is by default.
  6. When Select Features appears, ensure the following features are SELECTED for wireless printing:
    1. Network Printer Driver
    2. Network Scanner
    3. Control Center 4
    4. Status Monitor
    5. Remote Setup

PC-FAX Sending and PC-FAX Receiving are features required if you need to send and receive fax from your computer.

  1. Select the Yes option if you want to register your PC with the “Scan To” functions in your MFC-9130CW.
  2. Enter a name you want that will appear when the “Scan To” menu is selected in your MFC-9130CW. You can also enable and enter a PIN number for protection.
  3. In the Network Search Type, select “Search the network for devices and choose from a list of discovered devices (Recommended)”and make sure all your smartphones, tablets, laptops are connected to the WiFi.
  4. Select your MFC-9130CW (from Model Name) as the Brother machine you want to install.
  5. Click on the Finish button once a dialog box indicates that the installation process is complete. You must restart your computer for the changes from the printer setup to take effect.
