He was born on April 22, 1990 in Houston, USA. His genuine name is Richard Colson Baker but well known by his nick name Machine Gin Kelly (MGK). He was born in missionary family so he traveled a lot with his parents like Egypt, Germany and all over the United States.
His life became very tough when his mother left home and his father suffered from depression and unemployment as well. Richard was teased by his friends and neighbors. In order to find peace, he started listening to rap music.
Richard was registered at Shaker Heights High School. He started his music career from here by convincing local t-shirt shop owner to double as his MC Manager. It was time when his fans named him as Machine Gun Kelly (MGK) due to his rapid fire delivery.
In 2006, he built his reputation after releasing mixtape ‘Stamp of Approval’. The feedback was devastating as he became known as a performer and an artist. He started performing at local Cleveland venues.
He gained limelight after he was featured on MTV2’s Sucker Free style. His second mixtape was released in Feb 2010 named ‘100 Words and Running’. He made his national debut in May 2010, with the single ‘Alice in Wonderland’. It was released through Block Starz Music on iTunes. The feedback was wide positive and MGK won Best Midwest Artist award at the 2010 Underground Music Awards. His second mix tape was released in November 2010, titled ‘Lace Up’. It included the hometown anthem ‘Cleveland’. He made appearance in Juicy J track ‘Inhale’, which also starred Steve-O from the tele series Jackass in the music video.
In March 2011, MGK became part of first SXSW show in Austin, Texas. After signing a recording contract with Bad Boy Records and he released the music video ‘Wild Boy’, casting Waka Flocka Flame. In middle of 2011, he made a deal with Young and Reckless Clothing. His first EP, ‘Half Naked & Famous’ was released on March 20, 2012. It debuted at 46 on the Billboard 200.
He released his debut album ‘Lace Up’ in October 2012. The album started as number 4 on the US Billboard 200. Its took single ‘Wild Boy’ ranked at number 98 on the US Billboard Hot 100. It was certified gold by the RIAA. His song ‘Invincible’ became the official theme song of WrestleMania XXVIII and currently it is theme for Thursday Night Football on the NFL network. MGK self-released a mixtape titled ‘EST 4 Life’, which included both old and recently recorded material.
He released a music video in February 2013, for ‘Champions’ which highlighted Diddy and samples The Diplomats song ‘We are the Champions’. This video served as a promotional video for his brand new mixtape ‘Black Flag’ which ultimately released on June 26, 2013. French Montana, Kellin Quinn, Dub-O, Sean McGee and Tezo made guest appearances as well.
MGK released the song ‘Till I Die’ which was complemented with a music video on his VEVO account on January 5, 2015, his next song was, a music video titled ‘A Little More’. His 10-track mixtape titled ‘Fuck It’ was released in July, 2015. It included tracks that didn’t make it to the final track list of his second album ‘General Admission’ awaiting release.
On October 16, 201 5 he released album ‘General Admission’. It started at number 4 on the Billboard 200, it is estimated that 49,000 copies were sold in its first week. On other hand album also started at number one on the Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums. Following that in the mid of 2016, he released single ‘Bad Things’. It was collaboration with Camila Cabello, and ranked at number nine on the US Billboard Hot 100.
